An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form of alternating current. As a manufacturer of diverse engineering products, we at Pai Kane Group believe that it is important for every employee to understand the functioning of each unit that makes up the product. Hence the understanding of electric alternators is imperative.

Why alternators?

Most power generation stations use synchronous machines as their generators. Connection of these generators to the utility grid requires synchronization conditions to be met. An alternator is the core of power generation. The engine of a locomotive is nothing but an alternator driven by a diesel engine.

In order to ensure the quality, safety and reliability of our products and to keep the team members up-to-date, we hold regular training programs on various topics. We recently had a short training program on “Electric alternators – Application and problem solving” on 4th November 2017. It was conducted by Mr. Mahadev Swamy, the Associate Director at Nidec – Leroy Somer corporation.

An alternator is the core of power generation, and having a complete understanding of it is a necessity for all teams, which include: Sales, Manufacturing, Design, Engineering, Electrical and Product support. The topics of the training program were tailor-made for each team. In phases, we covered concepts right from the basic electricity to problem solving in a structured manner. The training got even more interesting when the Technical Director, Jose Fernandes shared his knowledge, expertise and experience in the field.

Each one of us who attended the training program was provided with practical training on the application and problem solving of electric alternators. The highlights of the training were understanding the practical do’s and don’ts at the site, fault finding, identification of faulty AVRs and other winding related issues.

On the whole, the training was a great learning experience. It also helped improve our understanding of the product, which in turn helps boost our level of confidence.
